VORDINGBORG, vår basstation.

VORDINGBORG, our basestation

Vordingborg is more than just the castle. There was also the town Vordingborg. The town was granted borough status as far back as at least 1231. Fortunately, the town proved capable of survival, developing slowly but surely over the years. The railway came to the town in 1870 and in 1937 the Storstrom Bridge replaced the ancient ferry link to Falster.

Today, Vordingborg is a modern town with practically all conceivable facilities: hospital, schools, sixth form college, commercial school, college of education and day-care centres, as well as theatre, cinema, marina, sports clubs, community centre and many active associations with something to suit every taste. There is a thriving commercial and business life in the town, with a number of large, well-known companies, as well as good traffic links - with buses, trains, harbor and motorway close by. Copenhagen is only an hour's drive away - and nature is on your doorstep. And the location of the town between woodland, open and rolling countryside and the sea is quite unique.

About 20.000 people live in the municipality of Vordingborg, with about half living in the town itself. Maybe Vordingborg is no longer the capital of Denmark. But Valdemar IV would surely have been content to see the town as it is today!

The Goose Tower is the best preserved medieval tower in Scandinavia built by Valdemar Atterdag in 1362-65 as part of the rebuilding and extension of the castle.

Today it is the best preserved building from the time of the Valdemars. Vordingborg was the favorite castle of Valdemar Atterdag and during his reign this was his royal residence, the domicile of the kingdom, and it held the documents of the kingdom too. The tower top is embellished with a golden goose which Valdemar Atterdag put there to mock the German Hanseatic towns' declaration of war.

The Goose Tower was and is the landmark of the city with the total height of 36 metres and a circumference of 33 metres. The walls are 3.5 metres thick. From the top there is a wonderful view over the city, Storstrømsbroen and the Farø Bridges.
